Gong for Empowerment: A Creative Music Experience for Gong, Voice, Breath and Movement (Full Day Courses ranging from 1 - 7 days)

Join Mike Tamburo for a unique and dynamic workshop that will explore using sound as a tool for personal empowerment and self healing.  Created as a series of day long course, each one day course is a stand alone experience but combined will give each participant a strong foundation in working with sound for inspiration, stress relief, self healing, meditation and unlocking one’s creative potential.

These courses explore the therapeutic use of sound on the musician/practitioner/player.  The focus here is not on playing for other people but the power of playing gong for one’s self. This is a great course for anyone interested in the gong, beginners to therapeutic sound work and music, non-musicians, meditators, yogis looking for beginning gong techniques or musicians who are seeking to add meditative and transformational elements to their practice and play.

These simple teachings can be applied to any instrument, but in these courses we will focus on the gong and the voice. Each day we will be immersed in a series of creative exercises, group play, rhythm games, meditative listening experiences, breathing techniques, conscious movements, different vocal toning exercises, vocalization practices and learning introductory techniques in gong playing.

Both the gong and the voice are simple instruments to begin to play, but as they are deeply explored and worked with, each instrument begins to unveil enough complexities and nuances to offer us a lifetime of new experiences, learning, revelation, deep inner healing and transformation. A world of changing tones emerge from the gong each time it is struck. A world of information and meaning emerges from the voice with each word we speak or tone we sing.

This course explores the age old concept of music as the healing force of the universe.  This course honors the power of the musician in the world and is a perfect place for even non-musicians to discover their innate connection to the true power of music. Mike Tamburo has spent a lifetime exploring this as practice and is grateful to act as a guiding force in your journey into sound.

The Music of the Gong Training (Generally 3 days (24 hours))

This course is for anyone who has taken the prerequisite of Gong Resonance Therapy : Module 1.

Join Mike Tamburo for an exploratory and experiential three day training that deepens the powerful practices we learned in Gong Resonance Therapy and takes us to a new level in our playing and our understanding of working with sound.  The focus of this training is on how our Sound Concerts actually sound.  The ‘Music of the Gong’ invites the player to deepen their connection to the gong as a musical instrument capable of having broad effects on consciousness and asks the player to move beyond protocols into a music of the moment.  Mike will immerse participants in a series of creative exercises, group improvisations and meditative listening experiences. We will refine playing techniques, explore rhythm and dynamics, strengthen our listening and improvisational skills, learn loose composition and deepen our personal sonic vocabulary. As a group, we will explore blending our playing with Multiple Gongs and other instruments (singing bowls, bells, strings) and other musicians in the sonic field.

Gong Resonance Therapy Training - Module 1: Gong Techniques

20 Hours

Are you fascinated by the healing and harmonic resonance of the Gong? Whether you are new to playing the gong or an experienced player, this workshop will offer a new perspective on how to work with this powerful sound current. Expand your relationship with the gong in a way that is transformative yet liberating, playful and creative. No prior experience playing the gong is necessary. Learn a number of gong strokes and playing techniques that will deepen your understanding and experience with the gong. Novices will get a solid base of playing techniques and deep listening exercises to help enter into an active state of meditation while playing. More experienced gong players will get an expanded vocabulary of sonic possibilities, subtleties and dynamics in producing various sounds, textures and tone qualities. We will also focus on playing the gong in different settings – individual therapy, group experience and Savasana.

Gong Resonance Therapy Training - Module 2: The Healing Power of the Gong

Prerequisite: Completion of Module 1: Gong Techniques from our Gong Resonance Therapy Training series + 100 hrs of practice playing the Gong.

Connect to the healing power of the Gong with Mike Tamburo. This weekend intensive module focuses on deepening your understanding of the energetic aspects of Gong playing. We will explore the subtle and dynamic aspects of the Gong – how it affects the mind, the body, the aura and how it opens a space of consciousness that allows us to access and balance the five elements (tattvas) and the pranic body. We will enhance our compassionate awareness and sensitivity to vibration and the deeper aspects of listening within the Gong space. We will begin to explore the therapeutic aspects of the Gong, moving beyond Savasana and working toward a foundation for utilizing Sound as a medicine for the future. This course builds from Crown of Eternity’s Module 1 Gong Techniques in the Gong Resonance Therapy Series intensives.

We will have a large selection of gongs to practice in small groups during the workshop. Participants are welcome to bring their own gong(s) to practice with as well.

Gong Craft : A Creative Music Experience with Mike Tamburo (4 Days - limited to 6 participants)

Join Mike Tamburo for an intimate four-day workshop that explores the creative potential of gongs and other metal instruments while exploring intentional and free improvisational music as small group. Mike Tamburo will immerse participants in a series of creative exercises, group improvisations and meditative listening experiences. We will refine playing techniques, learn loose composition (creating structure and phrases with sound), and deepen our personal sonic vocabulary. As a small group, we will explore blending our playing with other musicians and other instruments in the soundscape.

Gong Craft focuses mostly on a large variety of gongs (Paiste, Meinl, Sean Aceto, Chau, Feng (Wind), Thai, Yun and Bao), along with other instruments such as metallophones (freenote bars, tuned triangles, gong oblongs, bell plates, Burma bells, singing bowls, bells, etc.) and percussion instruments (drums, wood blocks, shakers, etc.)

Days One and Two: Technique and listening.

As a foundation, we will consider and practice the basic elements and skills that are important for good gong playing both solo and in a group. These include listening, technique, sound theory, dynamics, rhythm, attack and release, tone, timing, articulation, amplitude, structure, phrasing, themes, feeling, pulse, space, silence as well as developing a meditative mind and energetic sensitivity.

Students will leave with a new awareness to their touch and their tone (mallet to the gong), an increased skill set to physically play the gong, and knowledge on the musical potential of gongs in terms of dynamics, rhythm, structure, tone, harmony and improvisation.

Days Three and Four: Deepening our exploration into the soundscape.

We will delve into the dynamics of a small ensemble (or band) to further develop dynamic listening, group communication, self and group expression, improvisation and expanding our creative palette. A lot of our learning will come from the experience of playing in and being directed as a small group.

Students will explore many types of gong playing sessions and structure through practice, group improvisation, loose composition/creating structure with sound, and blending other instruments in the soundscape.  Students will develop a sensitivity to listening to and working with others while still owning their individual sound within the collective soundscape. Students will gain skills and techniques to create new ideas for their own sessions, and confidence to respond creatively in the moment.

This is an opportunity to learn, explore and play with a small group of sound lovers (including Mike Tamburo) in an intimate setting. Our hopes are that students will walk away more thoughtful musicians and artists, more dynamic listeners, creative thinkers and communicators.

This course is limited to 4-6 people to ensure lessons and refinements are timely and powerful.

Sorry, no drop-ins. Phone interview is mandatory before being enrolled. Gong Craft is not a beginner’s course, but beginners are welcome and encouraged to interview. No matter your experience level, Gong Craft requires great flexibility and an open mind. We will listen more than we play.

We are looking forward to exploring the world of sound with you.

Through creative exercises, group improvisations and meditative listening experiences, we will refine and experiment with playing techniques, learn loose composition (structure, phrasing, etc.) and deepen our personal sonic vocabulary. As an ensemble, we will explore blending our playing with other musicians and other instruments in the soundscape.

This is a great course for anyone interested in group composition and group playing, musicians seeking to add meditative and transformational elements to their practice and play. and “non-musicians” to discover their innate connection to the true power and collective power of music.

Learners will leave with a new awareness to their touch and their tone (mallet to the gong), an increased skill set to physically play the gong, and knowledge on the musical potential of gongs in terms of dynamics, rhythm, structure, tone, harmony and improvisation.

Days Three, Four and Five: Deeply Exploring Soundscapes As An Ensemble.

Learners will explore many types of gong playing sessions and structure through practice, group improvisation, loose composition/creating structure with sound, and blending other instruments in the soundscape. We will also practice these skills beyond our classroom walls, as we venture out to explore some of Seattle’s unique surrounding soundscapes.

We will delve into the dynamics of an ensemble (or band) to further develop dynamic listening, group communication, self and group expression, improvisation and expanding our creative palette. A lot of our learning will come from the experience of playing in and being directed as both large and small groups. Learners will develop a sensitivity to listening to and working with others while still owning their individual sound within the collective soundscape. We will write and create music together. Learners will gain skills and techniques to create new ideas for their own sessions, and confidence to respond creatively in the moment.
